I think Democrats should HAMMER Bush and those in Congress who voted against the stem cell funding. What an outrage that we are not allowed to spend OUR money (Republicans tell us all the time how tax money is really OUR money!) on something that may save our lives and that the vast majority of tax payers are willing to support with Federal tax money.
It's a fucking outrage and it's shameless politics, but I hardly hear a word about it from Democrats except kinda weak-kneed support of the bill but steering clear of the even the word "embryo" so as not to offend the religious anti-abortion voters. Bullshit!
Bush veto's one bill, for the first time since coming to office to
block legislation on what may turn out be the medical breakthrough of the century. And does so using the most absurd reasoning I have ever heard...because of his respect for human life, he would rather we throw embryos into the trash than allow them, at least, the dignity of their sacrifice being for the benefit of all of mankind??
Is he smoking crack? Shouldn't this automatically make us want to stand up, point a finger at him and yell "IDIOT"?
I know I do!
If it is wrong to end human life, even if through their
sacrifice, many lives may be saved...then how come that doesn't apply to Iraq???
It's utterly ridiculous to forbid vital medical research because of some convoluted hypocrisy that we can't decide to end a life, only God can do that...and then Bush takes us into a preemptive war that kills ten's of thousands of innocent civilians. He's justifying sending men to die and innocents to be killed by the
the thousands because their sacrifice is in the name of peace???
Doesn't this strike you as something we should be making a lot of noise about...the American people are with us
solidly on this one and I would use it to bring back to the publics mind everything from Terri Schiavo to teaching intelligent design in schools. Those are big losers for the Republicans, real big.
Republicans think this is going to motivate their base and prove to them why they need Republicans, who honor the culture of life, instead of God-less Democrats...but I think they're dead
wrong. Republicans are gambling here, they knew this would draw a veto and would not be over-ridden, they think they can have it both ways. Bush and the GOP leadership worked this out weeks ago but, in my humble opinion, they screwed up big time. This is NOT where America is on this issue and it's one about which people feel personally pertains to them. I think people could see this as one more reason to dump a Republican incumbent because they feel they are too controlled by the religious wing of thier party.
I also see some Terri Schiavo overtones here and the Republicans are still recovering from that one.
Don't forget, the American people don't like Government dictating to them in the medical arena especially when it comes to life and "death dignity" issues.
This is a big loser for them and a bigger winner for us if we are willing to make it one.
I suggest to everyone that we use this opportunity to get on message and start beating this drum all the way through November. It's an opening that Democrats should blast through in every media outlet and blog on the planet. One thing is certain, if the shoe was on the other foot... Republicans sure as hell would!
