It's obvious that American's, except for a shrinking few, have decided Bush is a poor leader. They view him as shallow and stubborn and hypocritical. They blame him for the war and Kartina, and a host of other messes his administration has bungled(and the blame is well placed!).
The Democrats find themselves riding the strongest wave of support in the country for Progressive ideas for more than a decade. The country is so sick of the way Bush and the Republicans have run the country over the last six years that the '08 elections are literally in the palm of our hands...http://
The country is yearning for dialog, reason and thoughtful compromise from its leaders.
The Republicans in Congress are doing their part to help the Democrats...they look like impotent intransigent lemmings blindly following Bush (and his escalation strategy) off a cliff while yelling it's the defeatist Democrats that are the problem.
They look feckless and ridiculous and extreme.
And Independents, much more than Democrats, are centrist voters which have abandoned the Republicans in droves. These voters want dialog and compromise from Republicans and Democrats to cooperate and solve the pressing issues facing this country...
So what do we, the Democrats, do to take advantage of this amazing opportunity to win-over millions of Americans to Progressive principles???
We go way out of our way to look extreme, uncompromising, defeatist and far left of where most of the country seems to be. Brilliant!
Harry Reid was an idiot to say we've lost the war. He's a GOP strategists wet-dream. That was a huge blunder that will delay the cause of getting our troops home for months, if not years.
And it seems now Democrats have decided to face-off with Bush by with-holding funds to the war unless we admit we've already been defeated and announce a date when US troops are leaving.
That's even more stupid.
Americans are not ready to say we've lost the war no matter what the polls say...in my experience Americans NEVER want to admit defeat and I suspect will not look kindly on the people that make them say "uncle" in front of the whole world.
Bush will win that fight and we will thrown the Republicans a life preserver just as they were about to go under for the third time.
America is in the process of completely giving up on Bush and GOP...all we need to do as Democrats is seem wise, reasonable, and willing to compromise if it moves the country toward solving our problems.
If we do this I suspect we will crush the GOP in the next elections and they will become a minority party for at least a decade.
If, on the other hand, Democrats look just as stubborn, extremist and out of touch as Bush by getting too far from the center in our attempts to get the troops home, we'll give the Republicans the ONLY chance they have of winning back Congress and the White house in 2008.
